Hey!
you!
yeah, you!
Seeing as y ou’ve all been here with the Miata since day one, I figured I should let you know I’m selling it off. Bittersweet, but it’s time for a change. I think I mentioned earlier that I posted a super quick ad a month ago asking $7k, and got overloaded with interested parties. I promptly deleted the ad, then flew off to Asia, determined to relist the car at a more market-appropriate price later on.
Later on is apparently today, as I find myself sitting in front of a laptop writing up a real ad. I’m hoping to sell ASAP (before I change my mind), and as such have priced it a fair deal lower than similar builds tend to sell for on the forums. Oh, speaking of which... while I will be posting to Craigslist, I expect this to sell to a Miata initiate through Miataturbo.net, Miata.net, Clubroadster, etc. That said if you know anyone who wants a Miata that has proven it’s unkillabaility (that’s a word), a Miata that has been lovingly upgraded with some of the absolute highest quality parts that are available, A Miata that will bring fear into the hearts of sports cars retailing for 10x as much (at least in the corners) well... A friends of Oppo discount will apply.
Question. For the craigslist listing, should I include pricing for the individual parts? I’m definitely not doing that on the forums as the prospective buyers will be familiar with everything I’ve installed, but I’m going back and forth over whether to include that for Craigslist.
anyways.... here’s the rough draft. I’ll finish it up after detailing the car. I’m guessing that will take most of the day, as I haven’t clay-barred in a while...
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
It’s time to say goodbye to my Miata. It is a 1995 NA with power locks, power windows and power antenna. I’ve been the owner for five years, and in that time it has never let me down, or left me stranded. I’ve maintained the car religiously, and spared no expense in upgrading parts as needed. This was not a track car, although it would certainly be a good one. Well over $20,000 spent in parts alone, so if you’re looking to build a high-performance Miata why not save some serious money and start with this one?
Asking $8500
I have receipts for 99% of the parts bought, and for the work that was done. I’ve also made wiring diagrams for the electrical work I’ve personally done to make it easier for any future owners or shops. This car has passed emissions every time without missing a beat. Engine was fully rebuilt 40k miles ago, and runs strong. I have a massive bin of both OEM and new aftermarket parts that can potentially be included with the sale as well.
Feel free to contact me with absolutely any questions.

Problems
One headlight motor has recently started to act a bit finicky. I haven’t had a chance to look at it yet, and have kept the headlights in the up position.
Driver’s side front fender has some chipped paint. I set rebound and compression too low initially after swapping on bigger winter tires, and the tire made contact with the lip of the fender when going over a large bump.
Paint looks great at 10ft, but this is a 25 year old and certainly isn’t showroom fresh, cosmetically.
Odometer stopped working at 190k miles. I swapped in a new cluster with 230k miles, and… that one stopped working after a few thousand miles. Unsure of actual mileage, but likely around 255k based on some napkin math.

What will replace it? :O

I want a bike. And thinking longterm, if I don't move I'll likely need a truck within a few years. I'd rather have a truck + bike than a truck + Miata.
Monster 821 or 1200 is the frontrunner.
A cheaper Japanese dual sport that I can thrash off road and money in the bank is also sounding good though...

Good luck with the sale. Your ad definitely seems geared towards enthusiasts. At least for the Craigslist version, you might want to add a few basic facts. Don’t just say NA, tell them if it’s a 1.6L or 1.8L. Is it a stick shift or automatic? 5 or 6 speed? I know it’s not auto, but your ad doesn’t say that.

Good point, I wasn’t really considering non-enthusiasts but I guess they have money too! Maybe I can snag a wealthy kid who was going to buy a modified w rx as his first car...

If you are going to list it on enthusiast sites, you could replace the detailed part listing with a link to the detailed ad on an enthusiast site “for more information on high quality parts installed, check out my ad on ______.”

Its too specialized to even bother with CL in my opinion. I’d say post up as is, the right buyer will see the value in the parts, and someone who doesn’t know won’t suddenly think “oh that’s a long list, I’ll pay triple what similar Mike miatas are going for!"
Good luck with the sale! If I hadn't just bought my Laguna I'd be interested.

You can never have too many Miatas
Yeah you’re probably right, but for $5 I might as well post to CL too. I was shocked how many Volvo enthusiasts found my modified 850 through CL!
There's a part of me that wants to buy a bone stock yellow NA, swap the Xidas over and part out the red one.

Oh yeah, for sure post it, but I expect y ou get a bunch of “this Miata costs x (insert CL ad for beat 1.6) , so will you sell it to me for x?”
Still open offer to swap on some racelands before you sell it. I’ll gladly dispose of the overpriced hypebeast coilovers for you

I thought it was preposterous at 7500. The affordable used miata market is fast becoming extinct because there’s always an idiot who thinks this is a deal.

Maybe I’m completely out of the loop, but what makes this car worth $8500 ? That clean white NA from earlier today went for only $4200 with 94K miles on the odometer. Your car has cosmetic flaws , extensive modifications , and over 250K miles . Here in Ohio I’m pretty sure that would be a $3000 car at most .
What gives?

The modifications add a lot of value in the M iata community, albeit yes, nowhere near as much as they were purchased for. The coilovers alone sell for almost $3k new and are regarded as the best suspension you can get in a Miata, bar none. Even two year old used ones generally l ose only about ten percent of their value when resold, as the demand is so high . Used Blackbird rollbars generally sell for the same price as new ones, as there’s no wait time. A lot of the pricier p arts on the car are like this, made from the biggest names in the Miata performance world and that’s why I can expect to get some value back from them, as apposed to the “budget builds” that are cut springs, neochrome steering wheels, deep dish wheels, etc. I suppose being a c ompletely rust-free PNW car might make it more likely for out of state buyers to show interest as well. 8 didn't realize how big of a deal that was until the endless hordes of interested east coast buyers for my two Volvos.
And unfortunately, even if this was stock it would probably sell for 4.5 -5.5 k around here just because of how much Miatas have gone up in value the last few years. Nowadays it seems like the $3k miatas are either und rivable, or in absolutely atrocious condition. Or both, to be honest. The NB’s are the value buy now. Makes me sad, but at the same time I’m glad I can get a bit more, even if it’s likely someone will just turn around and part the car out to get 12 -14 k, or to add the good bits to a cleaner NA.

You should definitely be able to get that kind of money for it. Non rusty NAs seem to go for $5-6k easy. And say another $2k for the roll bar and xidas, everything else is free stuff at that point. It's kind of a bad choice to not part out, but it's your loss I guess lol. I still think you are better off just keeping it since you will never get the exact car back if you sold it. You say you want to go do the motorcycle thing but it surely helps to have a real car sometimes.

You know, I haven’t even listed the car on CL or the forums yet, and yet I’ve gotten no less than ten serious responses from people who saw this post, as it was apparently shared to Google. Boy am I glad I put my burner email in one of the comments
